The BOP Wasps (all BOP players except those on other duties such as Super 14, Sevens, NZ Maori or Under 20 World Cup) played a game last week and this week. Mulch on the Mafia forum had this to say about the game against the Waikato Harlequins :-
36-20 to the Wasps. Tries to Colin Bourke, Lance MacDonald, Hayden Baird, Cory Aporo and a few others. Ruki Te Puna kicked 3 conversions.
Today the Wasps played the Hawkes Bay Saracens in Rotorua. The Hawkes Bay side was pretty strong, containing most of their successful 2007 team. Here is Snollygoster, again from the Mafia Forum.
Saracens(Hawkes Bay) 61 - Wasps 15 (BOP) 45
Have just got back from the game and thought some of you might like the result. Twas a game of two halves really.....Hawkes Bay won the first half 47-26 and BOP won the second 19-14.
Its pretty hard to read anything into this result for all sorts of reasons. The HB team had many handy players in their line up (including several Super 14 players and most of their team that did so well last year) and BOP were without quite a few of their stars....Delany, Nutbrown, Lattimer, King, Lawrence and Hunt to name a few. Overall it was a pretty entertaining affair with some great tries and quite a few not so great ones to......BOP scored two from intercepts and one from a charge down to a kick !
The first half was all HB with BOP playing like shite...I was all set to leave in disgust !! We couldn't tackle, catch the ball at kick offs, keep the ball at the breakdowns or seemingly do anything as a team. I have no idea what was said at halftime but the second half saw the whole game change....thankfully !!!
There were a few plusses :-
Colin Burke was in a class of his own whether on defence or attack. Its great to see him in such good form.
The scrum (despite some early wobbles) held its own admirably....maybe the Davison/Castle departure won't disable us like we all thought.
I only counted 3 missed lineout takes (which compared to last year isnt to bad....)
Aporo scored a hat trick of tries and looked exciting when given space.
Rettalick, some of the front row and Ruki Te Puni played well I thought but its tricky to single out individuals as players were always being changed etc etc.
Many negatives :-
The crowd was abysmal...less than 100 people watched (I counted) which is probably almost less than for a club game. It was never going to be a large crowd given the nature of the game and being mid week but that attendence is shocking. A Hawkes Bay supporter who I was talking to (who travelled up) said that this game in HB would have attracted thousands. I'm sure even a Whakatane or Te Puke venue would have bought in more punters.
The negatives from the team point of view are many but its early days in the season......
