A strong line-up, selected from the recent PGG Wrightson Sub-Union series, will represent the Bay of Plenty Wasps when they take on the (Waikato) Harlequins in their annual match-up.
The game to be played under lights at Hinuera on the 23rd June 2010 is another step in the selection process for the 2010 Bay of Plenty Steamers, who will contest the ITM Cup, which kicks off in late July 2010.
For the third successive year, the BOP Wasps have given their support to the selection process to choose the Steamers. The Wasps Club is a group of former Bay of Plenty players and administrators who foster and support rugby in the region.
The Wasps selection is balanced mixture, of Bay of Plenty stalwarts who can call on their experience in the top echelon of Baywide club rugby – and a number of newcomers who are seeking to break into the Steamers.
One player who put his hand up in the Sub-Union series was Aiden Kuka. The Te Puna club stalwart captained the Western Bay side that annexed the Te Hurinui Apanui Shield, in the 2010 Sub-Union encounters.
The Western Bay skipper led from the front, marshalling his troops with real enthusiasm, in the two matches against the Eastern Bay and Central Sub-Union teams. Leading from the front throughout the two games was rewarded when Aiden was awarded the PGG Wrightson Player of the Series.
Another player to impress during the Sub-Union games was Lance MacDonald. The Steamers player who sat on the sideline with injury for most of last season, made a real impact being named the player of the match, in the Western Bay game against Eastern Bay.
In charge of the Wasps selection will be a legend of Bay of Plenty Rugby. Clayton McMillan who played 113 games in the Bay uniform, will take charge of the Wasps side in Hinuera.
McMillan who has had a stint as the Steamers Manager, is the current Bay Development team coach, and has a close working relationship with Steamers head coach Sean Horan.
