A stunning day, large crowds, and exciting rugby combined to produce an outstanding finish to the 2009 Bartercard Baywide Rugby championships
The main event on the Tauranga Domain, between defending Premier champions Tauranga Sports, and archrivals Te Puke Sports produced a classic contest.
Six minutes into the first half Tauranga Sports struck first when Kyle O’Brien crossed for a touch down, converted by Eruera Haimona. The Te Puke reply came ten minutes later with Josh Harrison awarded a try.
A penalty apiece, and a dropped goal from Tauranga Sports Jason Karauria saw the defending champion in front. With the clock ticking down to half time, an intercept by Jason Harrison saw the Te Puke winger score his second try of the encounter, to give Te Puke a 15-13 lead at the break.
A try to Tauranga’s Jason Karauria and a penalty to Aaron Sutherland resulted in the scores locked at 18 all. Another deadlock came after Steven Honey touched down for the defending champions, with the five-point reply coming from Te Puke skipper Simon Chisholm.
With the prospect of extra time looming Eruera Haimona calmly kicked a penalty - with the Tauranga victory coming with Toby Arnold crossing for a try with time up on the clock. The 31-23 win to Tauranga Sports, gave the side an unprecedented three successive Premier championship titles.
The entrée on the main field at the Tauranga Domain was also an absorbing contest. Last years Division One runner-ups Te Puna met Eastern Bay side Te Teko. The Western Bay side made the early running with a penalty and converted try to lead 10 nil. A converted try to Te Teko resulted in Te Puna taking a three-point lead into the break.
In the second spell Justin Tutua dotted down for Te Teko to put them into the lead. A Ryan Hahipene penalty saw Te Teko take out their first Baywide championship 15-10.
The Colts decider was one-way traffic, with Ngongotaha defeating Te Puke Sports 42-3 in a six-try romp. Early in the match Courtney Mika crossed for the first of his two touchdowns, with the Rotorua side leading 21 nil at the break.
Te Puke’s points came early in the second half courtesy of a Stephen Munroe penalty, before Ngongotaha fired back to run in three further tries. Ngongotaha kicker Barney Te Kani celebrated his twentieth birthday in style, nailing six conversions.
Another team to taste Baywide glory for the first time was Rangiuru, who took out the Division Two title. In a match where the lead changed several time Rangiuru came back to defeat Ruatoki 25-16.
Katikati celebrated their return to Baywide rugby by taking out the Division Three crown, beating Waimana 35-20. Eastern Bay club Te Teko added a second title on the day winning the Senior Reserve crown from Opotiki 11-10.
