Tauranga Sports sneak past Rangataua
Written by BOP Union

The replay of last years Bartercard Premier championship between Tauranga Sports and Rangataua, was another battle of attrition before Tauranga Sports emerged victorious. The Saturday (13 June 2009) match took centre stage in the opening round of the Bartercard Baywide title race.

A good-sized crowd braved the wet conditions at Te Ariki Park, as Tauranga Sports made the early running. A 20-3 lead at the break courtesy of tries to Cullum Rettalick, Toby Arnold and Marcel Cumming Toone, suggested that the visitors would run away with the encounter in the second spell.

However Rangataua dug deep in the second half scoring posting thirteen unanswered points. A Jason Hona try, and the conversion by John Ririnui along with two penalties by Ririnui, weren’t quite enough as Tauranga Sports sneaked home 20-16.

At Murray Salt Stadium, Te Puke Sports toughed out a determined challenge from Rotorua heavyweight Rotoiti, to bank four points. Te Puke winger Josh Harrison scored the only touch down of the match, with ever reliable kicker Nick McCashin slotting three penalties - to give the home side a 14 nil lead at the break.

In what was a real second half arm wrestle, Rotoiti kicker Sekeli Bola posted the only points of the second spell, with the match finishing with a 14-3 advantage to Te Puke Sports.

Whakarewarewa, who were unbeaten in the first round of the Baywide rugby competition, continued on their winning way despatching Opotiki 45-3. Trent Vatselias and Scott Mayhew led the way with two tries apiece, with Kelly Haimona converting all six Whaka tries.

The Mount Maunganui comeback continued at Blake Park, when they posted a solid 28-10 victory over Whakatane Marist. The bonus point victory came from tries from Ted Tauroa, Zane Butler, Cory Aporo and Troye Elvin, with Sam Jurisich converting all four tries. For Whakatane, Alamoti Te Pou grabbed the visitors two tries.

Results in Division One, suggested that there will be a real battle to find the four teams that will contest the semi-finals. Kahukura came from the second echelon in the first round, to prove too good for Western Bay visitors Te Puna, with the home side posting a 25-12 win.

Greerton Marist thrilled their supporters with a 26 nil win over former Baywide heavyweights Ngongotaha, at Greerton Park. Te Teko showed that they will be genuine championship contenders with a 24-3 victory over Arataki, with Waikite getting home 25-13 from Reporoa.

Last seasons Division Two champions Paroa opened their title defence with a 28-10 loss to fellow Eastern Bay side Ruatoki. Former Baywide Premier side Kawerau sneaked home against Rangiuru 17-15 - with Eastern Districts and Marist St Michaels defeating Judea and Papamoa respectively.

The two Western Bay contenders in Division Three both posted impressive performances. Matakana Island at home were too good for Waimana 45-17, with Katikati defeating Galate 56-10. Other Div three sides to win were Edgecumbe who blitzed Murupara 62 nil, with Eastern Pirates squeezing past Apanui 15-12.

In the Colts division Ngongotaha continued their unbeaten run, posting forty five unanswered points against Rangataua - with Te Puke Sports, Tauranga Sports, Mount Maunganui, Rotoiti and Te Puna also finishing on the credit side of the points ladder.
