SILENCE is Golden.
Or for Bay fans, Silence is Gold Premium Covered Seating. The vast swathe of empty seats around the halfway line must be baffling for TV viewers, especially as there are two areas around the goal line that are packed full.
While being very pleasant for the rugby fan that likes the peace and quiet, there must surely be a way of filling this area up and creating some atmosphere.
It is of course the natural effect of charging 28 bucks to sit in the expensive seats, even when the opposition is lowly.
For a family of five with three young kids, last Friday would have cost $140 for the premier viewing spot or $34 for the cheaper covered seats.
When the expansion of the NPC was announced, the Fan foolishly thought the NZRU was promoting four new teams to the top flight.
We now know that they were in fact relegating four teams, the Bay included. Our current five-match winning streak includes only Taranaki of last season's division one and with another game against Manawatu on Thursday, five of our nine games this season have been against the promoted sides.
Two years ago we were gaining thrilling home victories over Waikato and Wellington.
This season we have stomped all over Counties and Hawke's Bay. Do the NZRU still expect the crowds to keep turning up? Watching the game live in the pub has to be a tempting option, even for the most ardent fan.
But enough of being a grouchy Fan. With an unchanged starting 15 for tomorrow's game at Manawatu, the Bay needs to put together a clinical performance to set themselves up for the quarterfinal.
We now know we will be going to Auckland, Waikato or North Harbour depending on the results from this weekend. Jump into the car and get behind the Bay wherever we play.
If it is foggy Hamilton then make even more effort so we can drown out the noise of those cowbells.
Finally, well done to North Harbour for removing our Shield from Canterbury.
It wasn't so much the smash and grab raid of our glorious Eden Park afternoon, more like sneaking out with it while nobody was watching. We even sent them Agent Tipoki to help out with the operation.
Yet five more reasons to be cheerful:
- Five consecutive wins.
- Mark Sorenson can get a job as a fireman if he misses out on the Chiefs.
- Referees handing out yellow cards to the opposition for once.
- First try for young Lance MacDonald.
- We start without Lutui, Upton, Latu, Delany and Tahana and win at a canter.
