Saint McLean of Whakatane |
Andrew Leslie (Les) McLean was the Bay’s first All Black and hence a complete legend in BOP rugby. He is one of only three men that has been selected for New Zealand as both a back and a forward at flanker and fullback.
He is however, synonymous with the Bay’s notorious black-death type doom that surrounds the Ranfurly Shield. In 1922 against Hawkes Bay as goal-kicker and captain he gave the goal-kicking duties to another player to convert the last minute try under the posts that promptly missed and the game ended as a 17-16 loss. He represented the All Blacks in two tests, scoring a try on debut hence having the distinction of being the first Bay player to score a try for the All Blacks.
