Saint Conway of Whakatane
Red Conway, yep, the same fellow that features in that Steinlager ad.  Isn’t it interesting that the other chap in that series of ads - Buck Shelford was born and bred in the Bay territory of Rotorua.  Obviously all the other unions are soft and we need more Bay players in the All Blacks.

A small chap (1.75m, 86kg) with a will and determination that well exceeded his build he first started out in rugby as a hooker but then shifted to the flank and went on to play 10 tests and 25 games for the All Blacks.  He also played softball – where he was a catcher and during one of these games he broke a finger and rather than miss the upcoming tour of South Africa he had it amputated.  Conway also captained the Bay from 1962 to 1968, a true legend of BOP rugby.

All Black 1959-1965.

Read about Red's All Black career at the rugby museum.
