Just when Rotoiti were being written out of semi-final contention in the Bartercard Baywide Premier championship – they stormed back into the picture when they defeated Rangataua on Saturday (11 July 2009).
While the competition formbook suggested Rangataua at home in front of their passionate supporters should be to good for the Rotorua visitors, Rotoiti had other ideas posting a vital 15-3 victory.
The visitors simply out muscled last year’s Premier runner-ups, relegating Rangataua from second to fifth on the point’s ledger. A second Rotoiti touchdown in the second spell extended the eight-point half time advantage to the visitors. For Rotoiti Sigfried Fisihoi, Josevata Tawake crossed for five points apiece, with John Ririnui the sole Rangataua point scorer with a penalty goal.
Whakarewarewa joined Te Puke Sports at the top of the leader board, when they ran past Whakatane Marist 46-19, at Puarenga Park. Paula Asaeli led the way for Whaka with two tries with Steven Schenk, Himiona Marr, Trent Sweeney, Trent Vatselias, Harold Koia, and Pomane Karauria all dotting down.
The Eastern Bay side belied their position at the bottom of the points tally, with another game performance. Whakarewarewa touchdowns were met with defiance, with the visitors grabbing three tries, awarded to Craig Edwards, Alomoti Te Pou and Thomas Haney.
The two other top echelon encounters were absolute nail biters with Tauranga Sports and Mount Maunganui getting home by a solitary point apiece. At Blake Park Mount Maunganui provided Chris Elvin with a celebratory present - with Elvin playing his 100th premier club game for the Mount against Opotiki.
Mount Maunganui who held a handy 15-5 lead at the break, had to withstand real pressure from Opotiki, who outscored the winner by thee tries to two. After eighty minutes of pulsating rugby, the scoreboard showed that Mount Maunganui had got home by a solitary point, to take out the match 18-17.
Another real arm wrestle took place at Murray Salt Stadium, where defending Premier titleholders Tauranga Sports, sneaked a one-point victory over Te Puke Sports. After the scores were locked at three apiece at the break, Tauranga Sports grabbed an 11-10 victory.
Te Teko continued their quest for Division One silverware preserving an unbeaten record when they defeated Ngongotaha 58-17. Te Puna cemented second spot in a Western Bay local derby getting past Greerton Marist 23-11, with Kahukura beating Reporoa 24-11.
In a weekend of close encounters, no match was tighter than the top of the table clash in Division Two, between Marist St Michaels and Ruatoki. The 27-26 victory to St Michaels told the story of a game where the advantage changed several times during the encounter.
Judea moved away from the relegation zone, with a hard fought 10-8 win over former Baywide heavyweights Rangiuru, at Maharaia Winiata Park. Eastern Districts and Papamoa battled to a 17 all draw, with Paroa defeating Kawerau 35-3.
In Division Three, Katikati moved a step closer to a Baywide second echelon berth next season, when they beat Matakana Island 25-3, in a top of the table match. Waimana were too good for Murupara posting a 65-3 victory, while Galatea got home from Apanui 26-20.
Ngongataha continue to lead the Colts competition after a 22-5 win over former Baywide champions Tauranga Sports. Te Puke Sports withstood a determined challenge from Opotiki 26-5, with Rotoiti defeating Taneatua 40-12.
