The cry of “The Mount is back” greeted the Mount Maunganui players as they walked off Blake Park, after upsetting Tauranga Sports in a Bartercard Baywide division one match on Saturday (30 May 2009). In what could only be described as a moderate season of success, prior to the battle of the bridge clash between the two archrivals – Mount Maunganui supporters had few expectations as there side entered the contest.
Sports made the early running, taking a 13-3 lead into the halftime break, courtesy of a Steven Honey try and two penalties and a conversion from Eru Haimona. A dramatic change in the encounter came when two Tauranga Sports players were yellow carded. In an action packed twelve minutes, the Mount seized the opportunity and ran in four long-range tries. Mount halfback Steven Wallace finished off a couple of attacking runs to be rewarded with two touchdowns. The try of the match came when Bay Steamer Colin Bourke received the ball around half way, ran down the sideline and chipped ahead to regather the ball, then dotted the ball down for the third Mount touchdown. The fourth Mount try came from Chad Jacobs, to give the home side a major advantage with a quarter left in the game. A consolation Tauranga try was scored by Mike Rogers – with a further penalty from Mount fullback Sam Jurisich taking the final score to 32-18. A head to head battle between Whakatane Marist and fellow Eastern Bay side Te Teko next weekend, will decide which team grabs a place in the Baywide Premier championship. In Blue section results on Saturday Te Teko scored the last try of the encounter, to snatch a 17 all draw with Te Puke Sports. Whakatane Marist set up next weekend’s decider, when they won a high scoring match against fellow Marist team Greerton. Six tries to the home team resulted in a 43-21 victory, with Greerton kicker Andrew Boyd keeping his side in the match with seven penalties. The anticipated battle of attrition in the Gold section between Opotiki and Rangataua became a reality – with Rangataua holding out the home side 12-6. Taipari Kuka and Ashley Mason scored tries for Rangataua, with John Ririnui adding a conversion – while Sam Howe kicked two penalties for Opotiki. The two Rotorua Baywide heavyweights, both continued on their winning way posting solid victories. Rotoiti ran in eight tries to post a 51-17 victory, against a game Waikite team that never gave up the fight. Whakarewarewa were too strong for Te Puna with Tofu Pomale grabbing four tries in the 48-5 win. In division two Kahukura, Arataki and Ngongotaha all retained their unbeaten records.
