Media Release : Open letter to the Chiefs
Sunday, 31 October 2004
To the Chiefs and whom it may concern,

Suffice to say that the naming of the Chiefs 2005 squad has registered here with-in the Mafia much greater joy and appreciation than the squad announced last year.

We are pleased to see that all the hard work, effort and never-say die attitude that proved to the nation that last year’s combativeness was not a fluke, got us into the NPC semi finals, and most importantly won us the Ranfurly Shield has been reflected in the selection of 9 Bay players in the Chiefs this year.

After the disappointment of there being no Bay players named in the AB squad it was quite a lift to see 11 Bay players named in the Rebel Super 12, certainly much better than the 4 last year. Undoubtedly this will go a long way to foster goodwill and support towards the Chiefs franchise in the Bay.

We would like to take this moment to offer an olive branch to the Chiefs. As we all know our relationship has been rocky in the past, however in our gold and blue eyes justice to a few Bay players has seen to be served and we can offer our full and un-equivocal support to the 2005 Chiefs.

Certainly for the 2005 season us here in the Mafia are looking forward to kick-off and are keen to go along to the games to support the lads with much greater aplomb, enthusiasm and attendance than last year.  We can only hope that the Chiefs of 2005 can build on the success of last year and also to the Waikato and Bay unions and supporters working together for the good and future glory of the franchise, certainly this year the Chiefs can look forward to much more passionate support from the Bay and in particular the Mafia.

Yours in all sincerity,

BoP Mafia.
