The BoP Mafia website was launched at the start of the 2003 season and at the end of every season, BoP Mafia members vote for their player of the season.
In 2003, the inaugural player of the season award was given to Lord Glen Jackson as he guided the Steamers around the park at the peak of his powers. Grant McQuoid was the runner-up as he carved up in the midfield and the combative future All Black (for 2 minutes) Kevin Senio finished 3rd.

The winner was the massive Wayne Ormond, the talismanic leader of the Bay, who never took a backwards step. Runner-up was the maestro Glen Jackson in his final season and 3rd place went to Rua Tipoki who carved up in the midfield.
