Delany for the All Blacks?
Fan in the Stand

What a fantastic night in Rotorua. Wins over Northland and Counties were vital for a respectable season but turning over last season’s finalists shows that the Bay can again be involved in the battle for the play-off positions. This Fan is now ashamed of his pre-season prediction of 11th place but a dire pre-season afternoon in the Tauranga Domain was the cause of my undue pessimism.

Steamers bubble to top on player power
Bay of Plenty Times

Bay of Plenty's solo position at the top of the Air New Zealand Cup table has more to do with player power than the waving of a magic wand by the coaching staff.
Senior players such as captain Colin Bourke, Mike Delany, Culum Retallick and John Moore were excelling on and off field as the Steamers bagged their third successive win by toppling Wellington 21-17 in Rotorua on Saturday night.

Bay Unbeaten and Top
Newsflash

With the TAB offering $3.50 for a Bay victory, the mighty Steamers came out and played almost the perfect half of rugby in wet conditions. Almost perfect because Bourke's pass to Latimer floated forward when a third try would have made the game secure at half-time. Aporo scored the first try, storming through the Wellington defence with a couple of massive "don't argues", the second also to Aporo after Kirkpatrick and Smith had combined in a Wellington comedy of errors. Delany was in commanding form with the boot again. Wellington came back in the second half but needed a very dodgy try to make the scoreline close and in the end, the Bay were comfortable in the closing minutes.

BOP Steamers 21 (Cory Aporo 2 tries; Mike Delany 3 pens con) Wellington 17 (S Fuglistaller try; D Kirkpatrick 2 pen, F Fili 2 pens) HT 21-6.

Get to Rotorua on Saturday for the game of the round, a top of the table clash between the mighty Bay of Plenty Steamers and the Wellington Lions. Welington don't think they will need their All Blacks to beat us - let's prove them wrong. The expected side has been named for the Bay with only one change to the starting XV, Phil Burliegh replacing the injured Ben Smith and Aporo and Hunt moving out a spot, Hunt moving to the right wing.

15 August 2009 @ Rotorua International Stadium – 7.35pm kick-off
Zar Lawrence, Nigel Hunt, Cory Aporo, Phil Burliegh, Jason Hona, Mike Delany, Junior Poluleuligaga, Colin Bourke (captain) Luke Braid, Tanerau Latimer, Culum Retallick, John Moore, James McGougan, John Pareanga, Josh Hohneck.
Reserves: Dean Elmiger, Ted Tauroa, Mark Burman, Solomon King, Nick McCashin, Wayne Hughson, Toby Arnold.

Not available for selection: Ben Smith, Joe Savage, Clinton Toopi, Marcel Cummings-Toone, Josh Hall, Lance MacDonald.
