BAY WINS 24-13 TO MOVE BACK UP TO SECOND ON THE TABLE - GO THE BAY

I may have a naturally pessimistic nature but tonight could be the night where we abandon our semi-final hopes. Looking at the fixtures at the start of the season, 5 wins from 7 at this point is probably a win or 2 ahead of what we could have expected given the tricky opponents we had to face. Of our 7 home games, Northland, Tasman and the Naki were absolutely must win games to keep us clear of the bottom 4. Now we have exceeded expectations, all of our remaining 3 home games must be won (in my opinion) to give us a top 4 chance.

So we've ticked past the half way stage of the round robin play in the ANZC. After seeing Ferret Foster with his home-boys Craig Stevenson and Keith Robinson at our home games this season, it got me thinking about what kind of crazy selections he'll come up with this time. For the sake of debate, I thought I'd write up a quick review between the players who started in last week's game for both the Steamers and Waikato. Obviously neither team was at full strength, but it's a good chance to compare some fringe players; an area which is usually highly contentious when it comes to the Chiefs. So here goes.

A dysfunctional line-out, dropped passes, high balls being spilt, no game plan, no clue. A side that can’t do the basics beaten by a side that does no more than the basics. A semblance of hope in the second half but not enough to save the game.

Fear and Loathing in Inver-Vegas

While the media, life-long Dirty Scumbags and Bogans alike seethed at a perceived slight against their beloved Hamilton last week, no one seemed to spare a thought for the Bay of Plenty Steamers. If Hamilton is a boring city, then a trip to Invercargill could best be described as Catatonic.

Some back-country farmers from down south like to refer to the bright lights of Invercargill as "Inver-Vegas", which always pisses me off, being from Rotorua. It seems a little apt, however, in hindsight. The coaches this week chose to gamble with Waikato cast-off Mark Burman on the blindside flank; a move which was widely questioned on these boards in the days before the match. You would have to say that just like in Las Vegas, the house always wins. Burman was a weak link in our pack I thought, and showed a distinct lack of pace when Tuineau cantered past him for his try.

Bay of Plenty scored their first bonus point of the season, but Southland have gone to the top-of-the-table after winning last night's game in Invercargill 19-12.
The Steamers struggled throughout the Air New Zealand Cup clash, with captain Colin Bourke and coach Sean Horan admitting as much at Rugby Park.
