The day rose bright and sunny, well I think it did anyway, considering I was flying out of Christchurch after an extended snowboarding holiday so I am assuming here that it was sunny at the Mount…Anyway the day rose bright and sunny as the Mafia lads once again headed down to the fortress at Western Bay Finance Stadium, scowling and hurling abuse at any cows they saw along the way…

Anyone heard of the Heimlich manoeuvre?  Clearly when it comes to choking, we in the BoP would rival any of the sporting greats.

To be fair that is not altogether true, but when it comes to Ranfurly Shield challenges we have had more than our fair share of heart break. To be able to understand the BoP supporter, you must be able to relate to their pain, so this is a summary of the BoP’s (pain) Ranfurly Shield history.

A highly charged couple of weeks for the BoP Mafia and the Mighty Western Bay Finance Bay of Plenty Steamers (we do have to find a way to shorten that…) First there was the thrill, the glory, and the inevitable result of a BoP Ranfurly Shield challenge, and then there was the trip to the hated citadel of the blue and yellow colour stealers O-Goat-o who had conspired to have all their All Black experienced players available to play by having none of them selected for the RWC. In the corresponding clashes away from home two years ago the Steamers went down by 70 and 50 points respectively in those games. To lose by only 54 and 4 in 2003 shows how far the team has come.

Once again on a sunny Sunday the Mafia gathered at an undisclosed location (rather undisclosed, as furious text messaging had to take place before we all ended up at the right spot) to gather for the BoP’s initiation into the NPC first division 2003.  Hopes were high, in fact rather ecstatic but that was mainly due to the fact that we won the Bledisloe cup the night before, hopes were high due to the fact that if Reuben Thorne could make it in rugby, anybody could.  On a more serious note (hand me my piano-accordion Ethel) the Bay had performed well in pre-season games, with notable wins over Italy and Dirty-scumbag Waikato (come back Liam, all is forgiven).
