A middle-aged Hawke's Bay fan probably said it best _ if Bay of Plenty play next week like they did against the Magpies, their season will be over.
The Steamers were hammered 46-12 at McLean Park last night by a home side which went from strength to strength during the Air New Zealand Cup round 10 match.
The only bright spot of the night for Bay of Plenty was down in Invercargill where Canterbury beat Southland to leave the Steamers in fourth place, guaranteeing them a home quarter-final next week.
Steamers head coach Kevin Schuler said it was a fortuitous result after his side were cleaned out big time by the third-placed Magpies.

Another game at Baypark and another scrambled victory. This Fan has detected a pattern in 2008. The mighty Bay builds up an unassailable lead which then proves to be completely assailable in the second half. Against Southland our lead was 18 points after 30 minutes but the disintegration of our scrum and lineout saw us camped in our own half for the rest of the game and we were plucky enough - and lucky enough - to escape with the win.

A win and a loss since last I opened my lap
top, and still the lack of ability to play a second half of a game, and the
ability to finish of scoring opportunities. But despite that, a quarter
final booked, and probably a home one, barring Southland growing some skills and
beating the Cantabs at home. And it should be against those same Swede
Eaters too, well, maybe...
Anyway, the games...

For 36 minutes last night, the Bay of Plenty Steamers were romping towards a home quarterfinal in the Air New Zealand Cup.
With halfback Ruki Tipuna and wing Jason Hona finding holes all over the Southland defence, Bay of Plenty were impressive in a lively first-half performance that saw them lead 21-3 inside 25 minutes.
At stake was a probable home quarterfinal for the winners of a clash between two teams locked in fourth place coming into the match.

24-22 to the good guys and yet again, we had a dreamlike first half which turned into a nightmare in the second half. The first half an hour, we were running Southland ragged. 3 nice tries scored, lots of great handling and Ruki Tipuna cutting capers. Grumpy Jimmy Cowan snatched one back just before the half hour and after a bright start to the 2nd half saw us reach 24-10, we hardly ventured out of our own half for the rest of the game.
The lineout fell to pieces, high kicks weren't being caught and the defensive line was looking shaky. Luckily the spirit of the lads was there in bucket loads so there was often someone to save the day. Not to mention Southland dropped a lot of ball on a perfect night for handling.
The backline seemed to hum far better tonight when we could get our hands on the ball and Hona and MacDonald had some good runs. Tipuna was a star while as ever King, Latimer and Bourke were very good.
So presuming Canterbury do their job and tip over Hawke's Bay and Southland, we play off next week against the other Bay for the 3rd/4th finish. We should therefore finish up playing Southland or Taranaki at home in the quarter-finals. We know we can beat either of those sides. Go the mighty Bay Steamers and well done to Kevin Schuler and the team for their achievements to date.
