A coach at last for the Steamers, and despite being 412th on the list, the right man for the job.

Kevin Schuler getting the nod for the head coaching (at least) adds some continuity to the role.  He's been part of the set up since the glory season of 2003, when Ranfurly Shields were knocking around in the back cupboard and NPC semi final trips to Christchurch were part and parcel of a season.

bell_andreHaving a look through the BoP Rugby Union website the other day, and happened upon the contacts page, as you do when being nosey, seeing if there are any changes and the like.

And there were changes.

Nothing major, and you would not even notice it if you had not been there before, as it is not a change, but a mysterious 'disappearance'.

And what is the little change?  Andre Bell, coach for 2006, is gone.

No fan fare, no press releases (not that the union seem to know what a press release is at any rate), no nothing.  He's just 'gone'.  A disappearance that the Mafia itself would be proud of - a bit like the vanishing of Hori BoP at home games in the past season - but that is digressing, we're talking about Andre Bell being gone here.

So who is going to be coaching the team next season  - first Air New Zealand Cup game 6 months away now...

Just another one of the many cases of Bay Of Plenty Rugby, guns, and feet...

Steamer lock stocks have two empty barrels as Sorenson departs
Bay of Plenty Times

Sunday, 29 October 2006
Bay of Plenty's fragile lock stocks have been hit with another savage blow, with Mark Sorenson confirming he's heading to English club Newcastle on an 18-month contract. The outstanding Steamers performer this year - voted forward of the year by his peers last week - has drawn the curtain on his Bay career after again missing out on the Chiefs yesterday.

Longtime locking partner Bernie Upton has already transferred back to Wellington for next season.
But while previous omissions have been heavy with disappointment, the bad Super 14 news has been cushioned for Sorenson this time around.
