Well, shucks. What a start, folks. What a rip-roaring beginning to what was shaping as a monumentally crucial season for rugby supporters, players and yes, even administrators. Hell, we've been teetering on a knife-edge for a few seaons now as fans, knowing not what our boys will bring to the table each week to barter our support with. Would it be efficient, stylish, running rugby - resplendent with forward Aggression, domination of the break downs and cohesive set pieces? Or would it be dire confusion, lack of Menace in and around the ruck, poor handling and that sick feeling in the pit of your gut when the quotes in the paper on Monday mirror those of any losing (or winning, often-times) captain from around the country?

Auckland struggles to persuade their fans turn up to watch games at Eden Park. In desperation, they have demolished half of the ground in order to make the remaining stands look crowded but even this tactic failed on Saturday. It took a reasonable turnout of Bay fans to swell the numbers and the poor souls who did make the effort were rewarded with a downpour at kick-off which led to some Keystone Cops action on the waterlogged field.

All dream rides have to come to an end, as the Bay of Plenty Steamers found out yesterday at Eden Park.
Their four-game Air NZ Cup-winning streak ended at the hands of a much-improved Auckland side, beaten 29-15.

On a lovely Bay afternoon, the Steamers were more than hospitable to their Chiefs neighbours. Whereas the week before, Wellington raids were sternly repelled by dogged and determined defence, Waikato runners were waved through on repeated occasions in the first half. Only wild passes and ruck turnovers was keeping the Bay in the game despite a solid performance in the setpieces.

If Mike Delany has been copping grief from his teammates for the amount of press he's been getting in the past month, he'd better pack earmuffs for training this week.
Industrial-strength ones should do, enough to drown out even the dreaded clang of cowbells - after all, that's exactly what the Bay of Plenty first-five did at Baypark on Saturday.
