The Bay of Plenty Rugby Benevolent Society continues to support worthy causes around the country.
After giving Northland only their fourth Division 1 victory since 2002, the Society was even more generous on Sunday.
Manawatu was the grateful recipient of its first victory since returning to Division 1. It warmed my heart to see those happy faces in Palmerston North.
Each week, this fan is finding it harder to discover the positives in the performance of the Steamers.
I'm not so much scraping the barrel as taking a hammer and chisel to it.

I have read with amazement the comments from many so called loyal BOP supporters over the last few weeks on this website and the mafia forum, and my mid has been boggled. My first write of this piece caused a mole hunt at HQ that was breath taking. Fortunately, no one looked in the Janitors closet, so a re write is in order, with less clues...
Anyway, the calls to sack this person, and sack that person, are just utter rubbish and all BOP people contributing to this type of nonsense should be stood against a wall and shot, preferably by Mafia hatchet man Sportboy - he enjoys a good execution.
The union has recently had to endure the most ridiculous letter ever, written by the father of an ex player, who shall remain nameless, to protect the poor bugger from being embarrassed by dear old 'Dad'!
Anyway, sort yourself out 'Dad', perhaps communicate with your family a bit more, as your son did not make himself available for Rep Rugby this year as, in his own words (he is after all, 34 years of age) - "we don't play in the National Pressies Grade".
How can you blame current operations staff for players leaving - operations staff don't negotiate player contracts - CEO's and managers and all those fish-head types do. I don't know if there are any operations staff in NZ who decide what players come or go, they just have to work with what they are given, so lay off them!!

THURSDAY night rugby is a fantastic idea. By the time this column appears, last week's awful game is just a distant memory. Maybe I'll write about gardening instead.
The Fan in the Stand has almost forgotten the mad dash to Rotorua for the 7pm kick-off and the fact that the Steamers only started playing at a more traditional 7.30pm.
I can only just recall how someone next to me described our line-out as the worst ever, by any team, in any game of rugby.
That was a big call given the All Blacks v Australia match early in the century but I was forced to agree with him. Our throws to the back of the line-out achieved such distance that Marcel Cummings-Toone could consider a career as a gridiron quarterback.

IT is always a good sign when your first view of BlueChip Stadium is from a traffic jam and the people certainly turned out to see us take on the might of Auckland.
The seats were still being filled after kick-off but the great crowd did not get the result we all wanted and, as against Canterbury, the Bay was punished in the final 10 minutes.
It seems a long time since we took on and defeated Auckland at the ground in 2003.

The Fan in the Stand has a confession to make - he was merely the Fan in the Pub to watch our expected defeat to Canterbury.
I was heartened by the interest in provincial rugby when I walked into the pub - then I realised most of them were there to watch the Warriors. They got to cheer many tries, we applauded whenever we won a line-out.
There are many types of defeat. You can opt for the Otago method (Coach's final message to his young players: `It would be really great if you go out there and tackle, but hey if you don't feel like it, that's fine too').
