Sayonara to Schuler as coach leaves

Bay of Plenty Rugby has set a tight deadline on appointing a replacement for departing coach Kevin Schuler, who announced today he was going fulltime with Japanese club Yamaha.

The union has called for a two-week application process and hopes to appoint a replacement before the end of February.

BOPRU chairman Bruce Cameron and chief executive Jeremy Curragh are determined not to lose momentum after the Steamers improved showing last year _ something Schuler believes augurs well for the upcoming season.

"It's a short time-frame but the coaches that are out there will be organised with their CVs and people that are keen will get in pretty quick," Schuler said.

Chiefs pivot dictates pace

Mike Delany's short-term goal is to be the best first-five in the Chiefs - though when his chief rival is an All Black, it comes with certain implications.

The Bay of Plenty pivot provided some of the few sparks on a sultry Rotorua evening last night as the Chiefs beat the Highlanders 36-19 in a pre-season match.

With All Black Stephen Donald still resting from the end-of-year tour, Delany showed no let-up in last year's provincial momentum, with a sharp eye for the break and some tactical acumen as the Chiefs went wide where possible.

With quality first-fives thin on the ground in New Zealand, Delany's ambitions are simple - keep incumbent Donald honest and leave all other matters to the selectors.

The Fan loves the ritual of the Super 14 squad announcements. Any rugby fan can name the top 15 players for each franchise but the fun comes in guessing who is going to make up the bench-warmers and water-boys.
