Finally the weather gods smiled on us and produced a corker of an afternoon. Regular Baypark visitors found themselves overdressed as they cautiously put on the extra layer required for the typical icy blasts.
A very healthy crowd turned up to witness the novelty of sunshine and they were treated to a free-flowing game that ended with the correct result. The Steamers must have been well prepared in the sheds as they started the game in a ruthlessly efficient way and put two tries on the Stags while they were still acclimatising.

The bad news keeps coming for the Steamers in the lead up to their final-round match with Northland in Whangarei tonight although it was tempered with a positive development long-term.
Lock Culum Retallick couldn't escape his judicial charge for stomping at NZRU headquarters last night. He was suspended for two weeks for stomping on Southland prop Chris King last week.
Retallick denied the charge and new video evidence seemed to show his boot had missed King entirely but NZRU judicial officer Bruce Squire found the charge proved.

The sun shone brightly and these photos show some of the action as the Bay defeated Southland 33-22.
To the right is Luke Andrews who, after a long career in New Zealand and overseas, has done great work for the Steamers in 2010. Here we see him marauding up field after coming on as a replacement for another warhorse, John Moore.

Last year Mike Delany was the go-to man for Bay of Plenty, his match-winning deeds vaulting him into an All Black berth by season's end.
It speaks volumes for the growth of the 2010 team that Delany saw fit to apologise for his goal-kicking woes on Saturday, yet his Steamers still rolled favourites Southland 33-22.
In glorious sunshine and with a boisterous 11,000-strong Baypark crowd behind them, Bay of Plenty used flair and try-scoring brilliance to leap out to a big lead, then eased home with the odd heart palpitation thrown in.

A boiling hot day down at Baypark and the Steamers started like a traing and then rather limped home. A superb first-half saw us leading 20-3 and when we scored a couple more tries to lead 30-8 it looked all over. The Stags came back though and as we tired badly. All's well that ends well and take maximum points on Thursday against Northland and other results could see us into the Top 4.
Bay of Plenty 33 (Mike Delany, Lelia Masaga, Toby Arnold, Taniela Moa, Colin Bourke tries; Delany con, 2 pen) Southland 22 (James Wilson, Seminar Manu, Brayden Mitchell tries; Wilson 2 con, pen). HT: 20-3
Top 6: Canterbury 45, Waikato 40, Auckland 40, Wellington 38, Taranaki 37, Bay of Plenty 37.
