Much closer than the TAB expected but no result for the Steamers, losing 11-6 to a last minute try to Wellington winger Cory Jane. Still, a bonus point isn't a bad thing... though the draw would have been better. Point scorers for the two teams were:

Wellington 11
Cory Jane - Try
Jimmy Gopperth - 2 penalties

Bay of Plenty 6
Murray Williams - 2 penalties

Some key events by the minute:
10th minute: Penalty to Murray Williams 3-0 BoP
17th minute: Penalty to Jimmy Gopperth 3 all
23rd minute: Williams misses a penalty
28th minute: Gopperth misses a penalty
29th minute: Steve "celebrity ref" Walsh first warns Nili Latu for infringements at the breakdown
32nd minute: BoP wheels Wellington scrum through 90 degrees to win the feed
35th minute: Jeffrey Ierome goes down injured
40th minute: Tana Umaga leaves the field with an apparent broken finger

Halftime: 3 all.
* BoP conceeded 3 ruck and maul penalties to 1 for Wellington.
* Territory and possession relatively even.
* BoP leading kicks in play.

49th minute: Gopperth misses shot at goal
50th minute: Conrad Smith takes the field for Wellington
63rd minute: Dave Johnston to the blood bin replaced by Hayden Reid
64th Minute: Ben Herring on for Thomas Waldrom for Wellington. Aiden Kuku on for Latu, and Wayne Hughson on for a hobbling Ierome.
65th minute: Penalty to Williams 6-3 BoP
67th minute: Warren Smith penalised for holding on from the kickoff. Gopperth kicks the penalty 6 all.
69th minute: BoP scrum conceeds a tighthead
79th minute: BoP fails to chase out after a Murray Williams clearance from their ingoal and allows Wellington to take a quick throw
80th minute: Custard.

A few thoughts in general on the BoP performance. The forwards overall were superb, it was hard to tell that Wellington had any All Blacks in their pack the way the BoP forwards took it to them. The BoP scrum was dominant in the first half and seemed to wheel the Wellington ball at will, thought it did seem to tire a little in the second half and conceede a tight head. Lineouts were much better than last week against Waikato and it was possibly Pareanga's best game yet for the Steamers. Latu was into everything in the first 20 minutes and it would have been a very interesting game had Lutui also been there as a close quarters runner.

Unfortunately while the forwards were great the backs were poor, with the notable exceptions of Jamie Nutbrown and Jeffry Ierome. Nutbrown took all the right options while Ierome was the only Bay back to threaten with ball in hand. We can only hope he stays injury free. Otherwise there was little to shout about. Williams kicked okay tactically but his option taking with ball in hand was ponderous and his passing woeful. Delany showed some life at the back with good kicking from hand mixed with the odd shocker. The play didn't really run the way of the wings but when it did Tahana didn't seem to be his usual industrious self.

Overall a promising effort from the Bay which belied the odds but couldn't quite upset them. Roll on Harbour next week at the Steampot.
