It was a steamy afternoon in Rotorua for the pre-season game between the Chiefs and the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes came out the winners 17-12 but the level of skill was fairly low from both sides as they struggled for any cohesion. As usual the benches were emptied early which made things even more random. A fair crowd turned out, around 1700 apparently.
The Bay players did OK, Delany was solid (but overshadowed by Nanai-Williams at full-back when he came on). Latimer looked abrasive and Hona did well in the big time although looking a bit lost on the right wing. He did enough to travel to South Africa as cover for the injured Masaga. When Junior replaced Leonard his crisp pass was noticeable. Sunday morning NZ time is when the Chiefs start their campaign against the Sharks. Will they finally start a season well?
