BOP Wasps Win First Encounter of the Season
Written by BOP Union
Thursday, 04 June 2009
The first Bay of Plenty representative match of the season took place at the Tauranga Domain on Wednesday (3 May 2009) - when a Bay squad playing under the Wasps banner defeated a Harlequins (Waikato) selection. The game was the first step in the selection of 2009 Bay of Plenty Steamers. With new Steamers Head Coach Greg Smith in charge, the Wasps made the early running when Josh Olsen touched down after five minutes. The next quarter of an hour belonged to the Waikato visitors, who ran in two converted tries to Frank Halai and a penalty goal to lead 17-7. A penalty try awarded by referee Bryce Lawrence, and the subsequent conversion slotted by Nick McCashin put the Bay selection back into the encounter. A 17-14 lead to the visitors at the half time break, testified to a match that was up for grabs. The first Bay touchdown after the spell came from a Waikato mistake, which resulted in an eighty metre dash, with Matt Vant Leven finishing off the move to dot down. A McCashin penalty, and a try to former League player Clinton Toopi stretched the Bay advantage. With ten minutes left on the clock, another Waikato mistake resulted in Kelly Haimona intercepting the ball, to run three quarters of the length of the field to score. A consolation touchdown to the Harlequins saw the match finish with the scoreboard showing a 36-22 victory to the Wasps. A real feature of the match, was some outstanding defence from the Bay of Plenty representatives, in the second quarter of the first spell. With the visitors holding a ten-point advantage, only some desperate protection of the try line stopped the opposition from cutting loose. The Steamers selection trials will continue next Wednesday (10 June 2009) when the Wasps play a BOP selection at Rotorua Boys High School. The match at the Rotorua secondary school continues a BOPRU move this season, to play a number of representative matches at grassroots venues.   ResultsBOP Wasps 36 (Josh Olsen, penalty try, Matt Vant Leven, Clinton Toopi, Kelly Haimona tries; Nick McCashin 2cons pen, Haimona 2cons) Waikato Harlequins 24 (Frank Halai 2, Eddie Uele tries; Trent Renata 3 cons pen)
