Baywide semis confirmed

While the top four teams entering the final round of the Bartercard Baywide Premier championship progressed to the semi-finals – it was not without some drama.

Defending champions Tauranga Sports returned home from Emery Park with a 37-31 victory against Rotoiti, in a game that was a battle royal throughout.

Every time Tauranga Sports put points on the board, the home side spurred on by their parochial supporters, would roar back into the contest. The standout player was Tauranga Sports fullback Toby Arnold, who touched down three times in the encounter.

Whakarewarewa wrapped up the top spot (and a home semi-final) when they waltzed away from Mount Maunganui 69-13. While the game was relatively close at the break, the 2006 Baywide champions put the peddle to the floorboard in the second spell, to post a eleven try victory.

Rangataua earned a semi-final against Tauranga Sports when they won an arm wrestle 26-22 against Te Puke Sports at Murray Salt Stadium. The visitors ran in four tries to three to take out the match, and hold onto the Jordan Cup (Western Bay challenge trophy) during the summer break. Te Puke Sports will travel to Rotorua to face Whaka in the second semi-final.

The battle for Eastern Bay Premier supremacy was emphatically taken out by Opotiki, when they defeated Whakatane Marist 44-10. The decisive result saw Opotiki finish the Baywide championship in a highly creditable fifth equal place.

Te Teko had a real battle with Greerton Marist at Greerton Park, before they finished as the top qualifier in Division One. The home side led 23-19 at the break, before Te Teko got their nose in front to take out the match 38-31, in a grand display of open running rugby.

In other Div One action, Te Puna wrapped up the second home semi with a 30-14 win against Reporoa. Kahukura and Waikite who both qualified for post section rugby, had a game of attrition, before Kahukura sneaked home 8-5.

Rangiuru were the only team to grab a semi-final berth from outside the top four, when they upset top of the table Marist St Michaels 27-10 in Division Two. The Rangiuru victory means that the two sides will meet again next weekend, in Rotorua.

Defending champions Paroa ensured they are still in the frame to defend their title with a 22-10 win over Eastern Districts. Ruatoki’s 25-10 over Kawerau means that Ruatoki progress to next weekend semi-finals – with Kawerau relegated from the Baywide ranks.

Matakana Island will make Bay rugby history next weekend, when they host a Division Three semi-final (against Waimana) on the Island. On Saturday they made sure of their second place spot running past Apanui 46-12.

Katikati finished as top qualifier in Div Three defeating Eastern Pirates 59-5, with Waimana winning a cliffhanger against Edgecumbe 8-6.

In the Colts quarterfinals Ngongotaha defeated Opotiki 32 nil, Te Puke Sports got past Whakarewarewa 39-10, with Tauranga Sports beating Mount Maunganui at Blake Park. The Rotoiti and Te Puna quarterfinal was not played but will be re scheduled for early next week to find the team to play Te Puke in the semi finals.
