Baywide Review Week 6
Written by BOP Union

Rangataua consolidated their Bartercard Baywide Premier Rugby top four position, when they comprehensively defeated Rotoiti on Saturday (30 April 2011).

While it is never easy for teams to return home from the cauldron of Emery Park, with the win points on their ledger card - Rangataua ran in four tries (to one) on their way to a emphatic 34-7 victory. The Rangataua touchdowns were awarded to Siaosi Longi who grabbed a double, with Ray Brown and Luke O'Brien also touching down. The value of a competent kicker was shown with Rory McConnochie converting all four tries and adding two conversions.

Seigfried Fisiihoi crossed for the only Rotoiti try of the match, with Sikeli Vorenasu adding the extra two points. The Rotoiti defeat has changed the complexion of the competition leader board, with Rangataua moving into third place while Rototit drops from second to fourth.

Defending Premier champions Tauranga Sports, won the Battle of the Bridge at Blake Park Mount Maunganui, defeating archrivals Mount Maunganui 23-15. Tauranga Sports made a grand start, and led 13-5 at the break with their forward pack having the edge on their Mount Maunganui counterparts.

Mount Maunganui ran the changes at halftime, with a number of substitutions, including former Super 15 player Jason Spice playing in the green and gold strip for the first time. While both teams scored two tries apiece, the difference was the goal kicking consistency of Nick Evemy with three penalties and two conversions. For the winners Tauranga lock Leon Power impressed until he succumbed to injury, with half back Josh Hall having a good game.

Competition leaders Whakarewarewa, made no race of the match-up with Whakatane Marist posting a 59-13 win, against the Eastern Bay side at Puarenga Park. Half back Chris Miller led the way with three tries, while Dave Marinkovic, Manu Saula, Rawiri Tapiata, Trent Sweeney, Hayden Baird and Doug Edwards also dotted the ball down.

However the Eastern Bay side had their moments in the game, with Steve Mapu and Hayden crossing for five points apiece. The Whaka victory extends their lead at the top of the Baywide points ladder by five from defending titleholders Tauranga Sports

Te Puke Sports ran in three tries on their way to a 25-7 victory over Waikite, while Opotiki came from 10 all at half time to beat Te Puna 30-17.

An 87-5 demolition of Marist St Michaels, by Division One leaders Te Teko, continued the Eastern Bay sides undefeated record in the Baywide second echelon. While Te Teko were relegated from the Premier ranks last season, 300 points in six games provides evidence of their determination to return to the Premier division.

The encounter between Katikati and Reporoa turned in to a real try fest before Katikati triumphed 60-27. The home side ran in ten touchdowns, with Reporoa earning a bonus points courtesy of four tries.

Greerton Marist cemented their second position in the competition with a 30-16 win against Kahukura, Ngongotaha edged out Rangiuru 24-18, with Paroa winning the local derby with Ruatoki 26-19.

There was no closer game in the Colts divisions than the encounter at Emery Park. At the final whistle, the scoreboard showed Rotoiti had sneaked home 19-17 against a game Ruatoki side. In other Blue section matches, Mount Maunganui defeated Whakatane Marist 50-12, with defending champions Te Puke Sports prevailing 77-5 against Waikite.

Whakarewarewa won their first match of the season in the Gold section getting past Judea 32-19, Opotiki proved too strong for Edgecumbe winning 58-3, Tauranga Sports won a battle of attrition with Marist St Michaels 27-17, while Greerton Marist ran away from Rangataua 82 nil.
