Baywide Review Week 3
Written by BOP Union
Monday, 12 April 2010
Bay of Plenty Baywide Premier rugby results on Saturday (10 April 2010) suggested that the 2010 top echelon championship, will go down to the wire in late July before the post section contenders are found.

With just three rounds concluded in the title race, the evenness of the competition is indicated by all four losing teams picking up bonus points on the weekend.

The Eastern Bay of Plenty local derby between home side Opotiki and Whakatane Marist, was a battle of attrition with just a solitary try in the match. The home side led 10-3 at the break, with Luke Morris scoring the Opotiki try and Sam Howe slotting the conversion and a penalty goal.

In spite of a determined reply from the Whakatane side, they were restricted to two penalty goals from the boot of Craig Edwards, with Opotiki posting a 10-6 victory. The Opotiki victory sees the team from one of the extremities of Bay of Plenty, posting an unbeaten record, with two wins and a draw from three matches.

Defending Baywide champions Tauranga Sports are the only team to post three wins in the competition, after they despatched Whakarewarewa 19-12 at Puarenga Park. Tauranga Sports dotted down three tries to Kent Rae, Matt Hodson and cricket star Te Ahu Davis - while Doug Edwards and Boxer Smith scored the two Whaka touchdowns.

Mount Maunganui finished their encounter with near neighbour Rangataua with the scoreboard showing a 21 all draw. This was the second game this season that the Mount have been involved in a tied result.

Chad Jacobs and Zion Nordstrom grabbed the home side tries, with Glen Strang and Alex Jessup crossing for Rangataua. The drawn result means that the Jordan Cup (WBOP Challenge trophy) remains in the Rangataua trophy cabinet.

Te Puna came from ten points down to defeat Te Teko at Dunderdale Park in the Eastern Bay. Tajohn Malata continued on his try scoring ways this season bagging a double, with Tipene Mika and Sam Holloway also dotting down for Te Puna.

Another close run affair took place at Murray Salt Stadium, where home side Te Puke Sports faced a determined challenge from long time rivals Rotoiti.  The visitors who took a 17-10 lead into the half time break, went on to eke out a 28-22 victory.

With three tries apiece, the difference at the end was the goal kicking of Rotoiti’s Whakataki Cunningham who calmly slotted three penalties and two conversions.

In Division One Waikite and Rangiuru continued too post big scores this season. Waikite ran away from Arataki 71-3, with Rangiuru waltzing away from Marist St Michaels 77-7. Other Div One side to post victories were Kahukura, Ngongotaha and Greerton Marist.

In the Colts title race, defending champions Ngongotaha had a good tussle with Te Puna before grabbing a 27-14 victory. Last years Baywide runner-up Te Puke Sports had a field day against Rotoiti winning 61-5 - with Mount Maunganui, Opotiki, Tauranga Sports, Marist St Michaels and Greerton Marist all banking win points.
