With three of the top four teams in the Bartercard Baywide Premier title race suffering defeat on Saturday (3 July 2010) – the major beneficiaries were Whakarewarewa and Rangataua, who have moved within striking distance of semi-final spots.
Rangataua thrilled their home supporters at Te Ariki Park, when they upset Tauranga Sports who are the defending Baywide Premier champions. While Tauranga Sports were without a number of their regular team members, the home side made a barnstorming start leading 21 nil after twenty minutes.
At 31-3 Rangataua seemed to have the match at their mercy, however a Tauranga second half resurrection turned the game into a competitive contest. While the visitors scored three second half touch downs, Rangataua took out the match 36-27.
Whakarewarewa kept their post section aspirations alive, running in seven tries on their way to defeating Te Teko 47-14, at Puarenga Park in Rotorua. Doug Edwards picked up double for Whaka, with Trent Sweeney, Paula Asaeli, Hayden Baird, Himiona Marr and Aaron Rameka also dotting down.
Two Eastern Bay sides produced some of their best form of the season to upset more favoured rivals. Whakatane Marist proved too good for Rotoiti, winning 17-11 at Rugby Park in Whakatane. Abe Tito scored a try for the winners, with Craig Edwards kicking four penalty goals.
In Opotiki the home side came from 5-6 down at the break, to grab two further second half tries, and post a 15-6 victory over Te Puke Sports. The home sides tries were awarded to George Takamore, Te Amo Wilbore and D'arcy Crosswell.
At Blake Park, second placed Mount Maunganui received plenty of second half cheek from Te Puna, before posting a 29-17 win. Leading 22-3 at half time, Mount Maunganui had to withstand a spirited comeback from Te Puna. At 22-17 the encounter was up for grabs, before Sam Jurisich crossed for the Mount to result in a final score of 29-17 to the home team.
Waikite remained the only unbeaten team in Baywide rugby, when they waltzed home from Paroa 41-21 in a Division One match. Reporoa continued their resurgence, which now sees them just outside the top four, in a 50-5 demolition of Ruatoki in Reporoa.
Greerton Marist changed places in the top four with Ngongotaha when the Rotorua side prevailed 17-9, with Kahukura defeating near neighbours Marist St Michaels 21-12 in other Div One match-ups.
Colts front-runner Te Puke Sports continued their charge for the Colts crown, defeating Tauranga Sports 32-13. Greerton Marist lost just their second game of the season going down 25-21 to Ngongotaha, with Mount Maunganui defeating Opotiki 39-5 in the championship title race.
