Baywide Preview Week 3
Written by BOP Union
Thursday, 08 April 2010
Last season saw the re-emergence of Eastern Bay of Plenty teams as contenders in the Bartercard Baywide Premier competition.

The Whakatane Marist upset of Whakarewarewa, and the Opotiki defeat of Rangataua at the Easter break, confirmed that the three Eastern Bay sides look genuine top four contenders this season.

Taking centre stage in the Eastern Bay this Saturday (10 April 2010) is the local derby between Opotiki and Whakatane Marist. There should be a large crowd on hand at the Opotiki Reserve, as the two neighbour’s battle for local superiority.
Fellow Eastern Bay contenders Te Teko are at home at Dunderdale Park, and will meet Te Puna. While Te Teko has a win over Whakatane Marist on their ledger sheet, Te Puna has started the season with two narrow losses.

Defending Baywide Premier Champions Tauranga Sports have picked up from last season with two victories. Last weekend they swept past Te Teko 71-22, laying down the challenge to the other top echelon contenders.

A real bonus for Tauranga is the return of flying winger Matt Hodson, who missed most of last season with injury. Last weekend he showcased his skills running in three tries. This Saturday the Tauranga team face a real challenge to their season unbeaten run.

Whakarewarewa at Puarenga Park in Rotorua will give the Tauranga visitors a reality check of their season ambitions. The Rotorua side have been perennial Baywide Premier Semi-finalists for the past decade, and never surrender at Puarenga Park without a real fight.

Western Bay neighbours Mount Maunganui and Rangataua will meet at Blake Park. The Western BOP Sub-Union challenge trophy is on the line and provides an extra edge to the match. Last season Rangataua finished the season with the Jordan Cup in their possession.

In the last few years the annual battles between Te Puke Sports and Rotoiti, have usually gone down to the wire. This weekend Rotoiti will travel to face Te Puke Sports at their home base at Murray Salt Stadium.

No team has made more of an impression in Division One this season, than Rangiuru. With a number of youngsters debuting, the Te Puke based side has posted over one hundred points in their first two encounters. This Saturday they host Marist St Michaels at Jamieson Oval.

In other Div One match-ups Arataki could struggle against Waikite when they come to call at Grenada Park, Paroa meet Kahukura in the Eastern Bay, Ngongotaha travel to Reporoa and Ruatoki host Greerton Marist at Tuhoe Park.

Defending Baywide Colts champions Ngongotaha could have their hands full against Te Puna at the Ngongotaha Domain. There will be plenty of interest in the curtain-raiser at Puarenga Park, with Whaka taking on their Tauranga Sports counterparts.
