For the first time, Bartercard Baywide teams enter the second Baywide round carrying through the points earned in the opening round of competition.
However the realities of wet and cold winter weather, and the injury toll, is likely to see some real changes on the points ladder in the next two months. The immediate goal for teams in both the Premier and Division One competitions is to make the semi-finals.
Defending premier champions Tauranga Sports, are likely to receive a real challenge from fellow Western Bay side Te Puke Sports, at the Tauranga Domain. To add to the intensity the Jordan Cup (Western BOP Challenge trophy) will be on the line.
In round one a relieved Tauranga Sports, returned home from Murray Salt Stadium with a 27-17 win. Two Tauranga converted tries late in the game, gave the visitors a come from behind victory.
Opotiki who have been the big improvers in Baywide rugby in recent seasons, will be provided with a real test of their top four aspirations, when the travel to play Mount Maunganui at Blake Park. A good performance from the Eastern Bay side that currently sit in fifth position, will put them on the list of genuine contenders.
Long time Baywide heavyweights Mount Maunganui, are showing the form that took them to the Baywide Premier crown in 2005. The home side like to throw the ball around and attack from any quarter on the field, and are sure to make life difficult for the Opotiki side.
An Eastern Bay local derby will take place when Whakatane Marist host Te Teko, Rotoiti at home should be too strong for Te Puna, while Rangataua and Whakarewarewa should have a willing battle at Te Ariki Park.
In division two bar a dramatic turn around in form, both Waikite and Rangiuru should qualify for post section play, The real battle will be for the last two spots with Ngongotaha, Greerton Marist, Paroa, Kahukura, and Ruatoki all in contention.
This weekend Greerton Marist host Waikite with Rangiuru at home to Kahukura. Reporoa will make a journey into the Eastern Bay to face Paroa, while Marist St Michaels could provide Ruatoki with plenty of opposition in Rotorua.
In the Colts round one, which runs to the last weekend in June, there is a tie at the top of the table where Greerton Marist has been joined by Te Puke Sports. This Saturday Greerton Marist could be tested by Mount Maunganui at Greerton Park, with Te Puke Sports at home to Te Puna.
