Baywide Finals Review
Written by BOP Union

Expending every last ounce of energy paid huge dividends for Tauranga Sports, who annexed the Bartercard Baywide Premier championship, at the Tauranga Domain on Saturday (7 August 2010).

Facing long time Western Bay rival Mount Maunganui in rain and windswept condition, the defending champions appeared to be in real trouble, with Mount Maunganui leading 10 nil at the half time break.

Mount kicker Sam Jurisich posted the first points of the of the Bartercard Baywide Finals Day main event, when he slotted a penalty goal after twelve minutes.

The Mount were further rewarded when Troye Elvin crossed for a try, after a sustained attack on the line by the Mount forwards. The subsequent conversion by Jurisich, saw Mount Maunganui with the ascendancy after the first forty minutes.

However the second half belonged to Tauranga Sports, who put their heads down in the awful conditions, and posted nineteen unanswered points. Nick Evemy kicked two penalty goals early in the second half, before Tauranga fullback Steven Honey crossed for a try.

Late in the match Evemy continued to punish the Mount mistakes, calmly slotting two further penalties, with Tauranga Sports taking out the Baywide final 19-10. The Tauranga victory, was built upon playing the game in the Mount half during the second spell.

While beaten Mount Maunganui never gave up the fight, with the Mount captain Chris Elvin praising the comeback performance from the Tauranga side in the second half.

Tauranga Sports have posted a record that may take many years to surpass, with four successive Baywide titles. To make the feat even more meritorious, three different coaches have been in charge of the championship victories - with 2010 mentor Ryan Dunnett in his debut season coaching at the club.

Waikite not only won the Division One title, but also finished their season with an unbeaten record when they defeated Rangiuru 22-10. The Rotorua side led 17-10 at the break, with the third Waikite try awarded to Carlo Putaranui clinching the championship title.

For the victors Keanu Apply-Sue, Anthony Flint, Carlos Putaranui recorded touch downs, with Sasu Wihape scoring a try for Rangiuru.

Te Puke Sports Colts also kept intact an unbeaten season record, when they defeated Tauranga Sports 19-3, in the Baywide Colts championship decider. There was extra joy in the teams victory, as it was the first Baywide championship recorded by Te Puke Sports.

Katikati won back to back Baywide titles annexing the Division Two crown, after winning the Division Three title last year. While the final score against Eastern Bay side Poroporo was 14-3, it was only in the last minutes that Katikati broke clear, after leading by three points for most of the second half.

There was some joy for Mount Maunganui on a very wet afternoon, when their second fifteen took out the Senior Reserve championship. Facing Whakarewarewa,  the Mount shot out to a early fifteen point lead. However the Rotorua side knuckled down to work their way back into the match. Sustained pressure from Mount Maunganui late in the game, resulted in the Mount taking out the match 24-15
