About the Family

The Bay of Plenty Mafia is an organisation with its origins lost somewhere in the mists of time but is rumoured to have evolved from cosmic dust on the http://www.thesilverfern.com/ message board where its less publicity shy activists regularly lurk.

Like many good BoP players, the BoP mafia family is also scattered far and wide and sadly some of the best and brightest no-longer reside within the hallowed boundaries of the blue and yellow land. However our fans still only wear the blue and yellow colours except when the Super 12 by necessity demands Chiefs gear or when our mighty national side is in action.

Currently the publicly acknowledged BoP Mafia is spread around the North Island, the West Island, and amongst the Secret Lairs of the world thanks to our resident arch-villain Baron Silas Greenback. Rumours of members in the South Island, England, Scandinavia, Dubai, USA and Ireland are unconfirmed. Over 750 fans of the Steamers are affiliated with the Mafia.

The BoP Mafia has amongst its wide locations and ranging goals a few common themes and irrevocable demands that make up our mission. For 2006 our top 10 demands are:

  • Somebody to explain the format of the Air New Zealand Cup to us.
  • The right to still call it "the NPC".
  • Simms Davison and Ben Castle to be recognised by the NZ selectors.
  • Glen Jackson for the All Blacks - if David Hill can become an All Black then anything is possible.
  • The Ranfurly Shield to reside in the BoP Trophy Cabinet permanently.
  • Massive crowd support for the Steamers wherever they play
  • The NZRFU to formally declare a certain match that absolutely didn’t happen in 1996 to be null and void in the record books. This is slightly more negotiable after the events of Sunday August 15th 2004.
  • An end to destructive forms of parochialism within the Bay boundaries and for home games to played at whichever venue(s) will give us the biggest crowds and the best results.
  • To beat "Dirty Scumbag Waikato" on a regular basis.
  • To have fun while supporting the Steamers.
