Bay prop simmering towards tour

Richard Loe called him a "journeyman" but if that's the case, Simms Davison has no complaints about the current journey he's on.

The Chiefs prop - who re-signed with Bay of Plenty this week - has emerged as one of the form props of the Super 14 competition.

He's recovered from injury in time to line up against the Western Force in Perth tonight knowing that if his side can win their next three matches, the barbs fired by former All Black Loe might be discarded forever.

"It's helped when players around you are playing well and it's been pretty exciting," Davison said.

Bay boosted by signings

There were few surprises but the message was clear - the Steamers don't intend facing another season as Air New Zealand Cup roadkill.
Last night's glitzy season launch in Tauranga announced four major re-signings, with Simms Davison, Mike Delany, Tanerau Latimer and Colin Bourke all committing for this season at least.

Bay open campaign to host Cup

Bay of Plenty Rugby has kick-started a major campaign to bring the 2011 Rugby World Cup to the province, hoping to cap a monumental year.

The union will also celebrate its centenary in 2011, and wants to create a legacy in the community for years to come.

With funding from both Rotorua and Tauranga local authorities, the union has advertised for a bid manager to spend the next six months selling the province to World Cup organising body Rugby New Zealand 2011.

"We do have a successful history in hosting the big events," BOPRU bid coordinator Mike Rogers said.

Three Steamers matches for Baypark

THE deals have been done and the Bay of Plenty Steamers' home games for 2008 are finally decided.

The financially troubled rugby union's board has agreed to split its five home matches between BayPark in Mount Maunganui and Rotorua International Stadium.

Three matches will be played at the Mount and two in Rotorua. Baypark will also host a pre-season game against North Harbour.
